KOKO Fuel-like Product Emerges Months After KOKO Networks Exited Kenya

Questions have emerged on social media after a cooking product resembling KOKO Fuel, called Moto Nzuri, began appearing in parts of Kenya months after KOKO Networks exited the local market.

A video of the product, which looks like KOKO, circulating online has led to speculation that the product may be linked to KOKO; however, there is no official confirmation that KOKO owns the product.

KOKO Networks officially stopped its operations in the Kenyan market on January 31, 2026, which brought to an end one of Kenya’s clean cooking fuel programmes.

The company stopped its operations citing financial difficulties after a prolonged regulatory dispute with the Kenyan government over approvals that are required to sell carbon credits in the market.

What KOKO Did

KOKO company supplied bioethanol through a network of smart dispensers and relied heavily on carbon credit revenues to subsidise fuel prices for consumers.

Additionally KOKO company operated thousands of smart fuel dispensers installed in supermarkets and retail shops, allowing customers to purchase bioethanol for specially designed KOKO cookers.

Reports indicate that the lack of the government’s authorisation eventually made the company’s business model financially unstable, which led to the close of its operations.

After KOKO wrapped up its operations, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) was appointed administrator of KOKO Networks Limited and KOKO Networks Global Services (Kenya) Limited.

Appointed Administration

The appointed administrators assumed control of the affairs of the company and even invited creditors to submit claims as they also explored options like restructuring the business.

In July 2026, KOKO started the process of selling KOKO Networks’ assets, which include the technology, fuel distribution infrastructure, manufacturing facilities and intellectual property.

As the reports of a similar cooking product continue to circulate, neither PwC nor KOKO Networks have announced publicly whether their brand has been taken over by a new person.

It remains unclear whether the new product, which resembles KOKO, belongs to KOKO or is an entirely different company.
