The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has today, September 16, announced that its iTax system is experiencing downtime, leaving some taxpayers unable to file their returns as the September 20 deadline approaches.

The authority acknowledged the disruption in responses to taxpayers seeking assistance, advising them to try accessing the system later.

“Please note we currently are experiencing a system downtime- kindly try again later. Apologies for the inconvenience. ^JA,” KRA told one taxpayer.

The disruption has caused frustration among taxpayers who said they had been unable to complete their filings.

Paul said he was trying to file his Turnover Tax (TOT) return but was encountering an error on the system.

“Trying to file TOT and this the error I am getting,” Paul said.

Keziah also reported difficulties accessing the system as the filing deadline draws closer.

“Good morning iTax system not working and 20th deadline is approaching,” Keziah said.

Immaculate said the problem had persisted for an extended period, making it difficult to complete the filing process.

“A whole month still experiencing the same problem, ‘Verification Failed. Please provide correct details,’” Immaculate said.

Meanwhile, Franklin also asked KRA to resolve the problem, saying he had been unable to file his returns.

“Kindly fix the iTax system, I haven’t filed anything since morning,” Franklin said.

KRA responded to Franklin, confirming that the system was experiencing downtime and asking taxpayers to try again later.

KRA TOT Returns Due by September 20

KRA requires taxpayers registered for Turnover Tax to submit their returns and pay the tax due on or before the 20th day of the month following the end of the tax period.

The tax authority says TOT applies to resident persons or companies whose gross or expected annual turnover is more than Ksh1 million but does not exceed Ksh25 million.

The current Turnover Tax rate is 1.5% of gross sales. KRA says expenses are not deductible under the TOT regime because the tax is charged on gross sales.

Taxpayers file TOT returns through iTax by selecting the returns menu, choosing Turnover Tax and completing the required return before submitting it.
