Journalist Willis Raburu’s ex-wife, Marya Prude, has opened up about the circumstances that led her to file her own divorce petition, separate from that of her ex-husband, media personality Willis Raburu.

Speaking during an Iko nini podcast session, Marya said she had her own personal reasons for initiating the divorce process, stressing that she did not agree with Raburu’s grounds for separation.

When asked directly about her reasons, Marya stated that infidelity was the main factor that informed her decision.

“I had my own reasons. My reasons? Infidelity,” Marya said during the session.

She added that she felt it was important to have clear grounds rather than separating without explanation.

Further, Marya stated that Raburu had cited irreconcilable differences as his reason for seeking divorce, but she maintained that her own reasons were more specific and personal.

During the interview, Marya also touched on issues of marital rights, saying she was still legally married despite the ongoing separation process.

She noted that the absence of marital rights and unresolved legal matters had made the process more complicated, especially while negotiations were still ongoing.

“And the lack of marital rights. I don’t have marital rights. I’m not separated. I am still married. I am still married. I have no marital rights,” Marya said.

In addition, Marya explained that divorce proceedings can take time due to disputes involving property and child custody arrangements.

She said such matters often prolong the process, citing their own experience, which took more than a year due to disagreements despite not having any issues over property and children.

Divorce Papers Served on WhatsApp

Marya and Willis Raburu tied the knot in May 2017 in an intimate wedding ceremony.

However, their marriage faced tragedy when they lost their daughter in December 2019, and by 2020, the couple had separated and later finalised their divorce.

Later, Raburu admitted that they rushed into marriage without knowing each other deeply, and that he was the one who initiated the divorce process.

“I initiated the process of divorce, and all respect to her. Unfortunately, it happened. Nobody goes into a marriage with hopes to come out. It was painful, and I don’t wish it on anyone,” said Willis.

Messy and Emotionally Draining Process

Marya Prude has since spoken candidly about the divorce, describing the highly publicised break-up as messy, emotionally draining, and worsened by intense public scrutiny during the COVID-19 pandemic period.

She revealed that the separation and divorce happened at a time when social media users were heavily engaged online, which amplified speculation and attention around their personal lives shortly after the loss of their child.

Marya further explained that the pressure was overwhelming, saying she often felt judged in public spaces, while even her parents were subjected to hurtful comments from people claiming to know details about her situation.

Divorced While Still Working Things Out

Elsewhere, the social media personality revealed that she was shocked to be served with divorce papers when she believed they were still trying to work things out.

She added that, although they were already separated, the move had still caught her off guard. However, upon receiving the documents, she said that she had immediately accepted the situation.

“I was served divorce papers when I thought we were working on it. I found out on WhatsApp, but we were separated at that time. When I received these documents, I said it was okay. That was my immediate attitude. I said, ‘Oh, we have parents, we have pastors.’ I was done.”
