Kieni Waterfalls

A man drowned at Kieni Forest waterfalls in Gatundu North on Sunday, May 17, in the afternoon after he was swept off his feet by a strong current while swimming in the middle of the waterfalls.

The group, which had gone for a hiking and swimming trip organized by the Outscape Club, which runs tour services and organizes outdoor trips in the central part of Kenya, had a tour of the site, which is popular for hiking and swimming in central Kenya, when the drowning took place.

Footage of the drowning taken from the banks shows the man fighting the raging, brown water before disappearing.

A crowd can be seen standing at the edges with hands up, screaming out: “Help him! Help him! As he gets swept off his feet further downstream.

Uniformed Police at Kieni Waterfalls Never Helped

A uniformed man is visible standing next to another man, all of them staring into the water.

“Why is no one entering the water?” says one of the friends.

One of the victim’s friends then entered the water in an attempt to rescue his friend, but the current quickly overpowered him.

This person was clearly seen struggling in the current before returning to the bank, where he is no longer in a position to help the struggling victim.

About 60 seconds later another friend dove into the water and swam towards the drowning victim, where he reached the man and held him up for a period, before being pulled under by the force of the water along with the victim.

The people on the bank were heard shouting for assistance along with the help of several individuals on the bank, the second friend who dove into the water was pulled out and safe.

However, the victim was now completely lost and no longer in sight.

Several times the voice from the footage is heard stating, “I can’t see him, he has drowned.”

Out of the four friends who jumped in to rescue the victim, three were pulled out and saved. One did not make it.

This is likely because the strong current flowing in the water makes it impossible for people on the bank to get hold of the struggling man.

Police are yet to comment on the drowning as they had no public statement on Monday morning.

River Safety and Outdoor Activities

The Kieni forest waterfalls  is located in Gatundu North, Kiambu county, and serve as a popular location for both hiking and swimming.

According to some of the local people living in the area and tourist guides it becomes more dangerous in this place after rainy weather as there can be slippery rocks and currents too strong for swimmers.

The Outscape club released an official statement on their Instagram, passing Condolences to the family.

The organization holds regular hiking and camping trips to different parts of central Kenya for tourists.

Authorities and citizens are often warned against swimming in rivers and falls when it is raining and even after, this is because many are unaware of the danger posed by strong undercurrents.
