Family Demands Justice After Fatal Hippo Attack in Kirinyaga

The family of 45-year-old Fredrick Warui has now threatened to demand an explanation from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for its inaction following the fatal attack on their kin by a hippopotamus near his home in Mwea East, Kirinyaga County, on May 30, 2026.

Mr. Warui, from Kangondo village in Kirimara location of the said area, died around 2:20 am on May 31 at the Kerugoya County Referral Hospital after he was transferred from Kimbimbi Sub-County Hospital, where doctors had initially received him from the beast which attacked him around 10 pm on May 30.

His post-mortem report conducted at Kibugi Funeral Home in Kutus confirmed that he died of massive internal haemorrhage as a result of the deep penetrating wounds the wild animal inflicted on his chest and abdomen.

The post-mortem report also outlined a total number of injuries inflicted on Warui, including severe puncture wounds on both the chest and abdomen, cuts under the left armpit, bruises on the back and knees, a collapsed left lung, burst blood vessels and vast internal bleeding.

Warui’s wife, Beatrice Njeri and his sister Rose Wangui attended the post-mortem alongside Mwea East Sub-County detectives and are now demanding that action be taken on the incident.

“We were told that the animal had attacked but not that it had killed our brother. The KWS came and told us they will pay Ksh 30,000 for our brother’s burial, but nothing has been done. The wild animal is still within the area and the KWS should assure us that such attacks won’t happen again,” Wangui stated while speaking at the funeral home.

Escalating Human-Wildlife Conflict, Specifically Hippo Attacks, in a Local Area

The residents say that the attack proves that cases of human-wildlife conflict are escalating in the area.

According to the locals, at least four people have been attacked by hippos in the area this year and Warui is the only one who has lost his life, with the others attacked in Kiumbu, Gakungu and Ngomano locations having been rescued in time and their lives saved by medics.

They have now tasked KWS to investigate and ascertain that they are safe from stray wild animals.

The family had not indicated when they plan to lay their kin to rest.
