Sammy Otulo, Migori Youth’s head coach, has spoken about his inspiring path that led him to lead his team to the victory in the NSL competition, thus getting promoted to play in the FKF Premier League.
The coach, whose recent success in NSL is known to all, has shared the story of his football management career characterized by persistence and success.
Otulo has recalled how he started playing football in his native Migori region, the steps he made as a footballer and coach.
Speaking about his career path, Otulo traced his roots back to his first stint with Migori Youth and detailed how his coaching journey took him through schools and clubs in different regions before returning to lead the team to historic success.
“I started with Migori Youth when we were in Division Two, where we finished second. I then moved to Kanga High School and guided them to the national championships for the first time,” Otulo said.
Coaching Success Across Different Teams
Otulo said his success at Kanga High School opened doors for opportunities elsewhere, leading him to Nyamira, where he continued to build a reputation as a winning coach.
“From there, I joined another team in Nyamira where things also went well. We won several trophies, including the Governor Nyagarama Cup. I left the team having won five trophies and completed an entire Division Two season unbeaten,” Otulo stated.
According to the coach, he later left the club after its Division One slot was sold, prompting his return to Migori Youth with the objective of rebuilding the side and restoring its competitiveness.
“I later left after the club sold its Division One slot and decided to return to Migori Youth to rebuild the team. We reached the NSL promotion playoffs before I moved back to Nyamira to coach another side, Jets FC,” Otulo added.
Unbeaten Runs and Setbacks
Otulo noted that his time at Jets FC was also characterized by impressive performances, with the team completing an unbeaten Division Two campaign despite narrowly missing promotion.
“There, we also went through the entire Division Two season unbeaten, although we unfortunately lost in the playoffs,” Sammy Otulo noted.
He subsequently returned to Migori Youth for a second time, taking charge of a side that was struggling to avoid relegation and facing an uncertain future.
“I then returned to Migori Youth once again. Last season, the team was battling relegation, that is the journey as I remember it,” Sammy added.
