Mystery as Hospital Patient Found Hanging After Disappearing From Surgical Ward

A 63-year-old man who was admitted to Nazareth Hospital in Limuru, Kiambu County, was found dead in a suspected suicide incident early Friday morning, July 10, 2026.

The deceased, who was identified as Benson Kanyiri, had been admitted to the hospital on June 22, 2026, and was undergoing treatment for an enlarged prostate.

He had reportedly undergone two surgeries, a prostatectomy and a laparotomy, between June 23 and July 7.

The incident was reported at around 7:00 a.m. by the hospital matron, Irene Njoroge, prompting officers from Kiawaroga Police Station and the DCI to visit the scene.

Investigations

Preliminary investigations indicate that at about 5:30 a.m., a nurse accompanied by trainee medical staff went to the male surgical ward to administer medication but discovered that the patient was missing from his bed.

A search was launched, and his body was later found hanging from the roof of a veranda adjacent to the ward using a light green hospital bedsheet tied around his neck.

Police said the deceased still had an intact catheter in place and no other visible physical injuries were observed on the body.

Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances leading to the incident, including reviewing the events leading up to the patient’s disappearance from the ward before his body was discovered.

Hospital’s Security

Investigators are also expected to record statements from medical staff who were on duty during the night and early morning as part of the investigation.

Detectives are expected to examine the hospital’s security measures, including movement within the surgical ward, to establish how the patient left his bed unnoticed before he was later found dead.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers processed the scene before the body was transferred to the hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of his death.

The post-mortem examination is expected to help determine the exact cause of death, while investigators await any additional medical or forensic findings that may assist in the case.
