Property worth millions of shillings was allegedly destroyed after a fire broke out along Ngina Road in Kawangware, Nairobi, on Friday evening, June 26, 2026.
According to residents, the fire started at around 7:00 p.m. before quickly spreading to nearby houses and businesses.
Witnesses said the blaze burned for more than an hour, destroying several properties before it was brought under control.
Some residents claimed that firefighters from the Waithaka Fire Station arrived late and that the fire engine had no water, making it difficult to contain the flames in time.

One resident described the incident as heart-breaking, saying many families lost their homes and belongings.
“What happened yesterday on Ngina Road in Riruta was very sad. People’s houses burned for more than an hour while the fire engine from Waithaka Fire Station arrived late, and it reportedly had no water. By then, property worth millions had already been destroyed,” the resident said.
Emergency Teams Contain the Fire
Authorities have since confirmed that emergency teams managed to contain the fire later in the night, preventing it from spreading further into adjacent residential areas.
No casualties have been officially reported so far, although several families have been displaced and are currently seeking shelter.

Police Launch Investigations
Police have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire, with preliminary reports pointing to possible electrical faults or open flames within the settlement.
The affected area, located near Dagoretti Law Courts and bordering Kawangware and Riruta, is known for its densely built housing, a factor that may have contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze.
Similarly, the incident adds to a growing list of fire outbreaks reported across Nairobi in recent days, including a devastating blaze at Gikomba Market on June 21, 2026, raising concerns over safety measures and emergency response efficiency in informal settlements.
Residents have been urged to remain cautious and report any fire hazards as authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage.
