No One Will Be Spared: DCI Cracks Down on Ol Kalou By-Election Violence

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations into incidents of violence and disruption reported during the Ol Kalou by-election, pledging to bring all those responsible to justice regardless of their status or political affiliation.

In a statement dated July 19, the DCI said detectives are investigating reports that armed and hooded individuals were involved in the violence that disrupted the electoral exercise.

“ The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations into incidents of violence and disruption reported during the Ol Kalou by-election, including the involvement of armed and hooded individuals,” read part of the statement.

According to the agency, officers are pursuing every credible lead using forensic examination of available evidence, digital analysis, witness statements, and other investigative techniques.

DCI Says All Behind Ol Kalou By-Election Violence Will Face Justice

DCI also noted that the objective is to establish the identities of everyone involved and ensure they are apprehended to face the law.

“The DCI affirms that all persons found to have planned, financed, incited or participated in the criminal acts will be brought to justice,” read part of the statement.

The Directorate further stressed that no individual would be exempt from due process on account of their status, position or political affiliation.

Meanwhile, the DCI has appealed to members of the public with information that could assist the investigations to report it confidentially through the #FichuaKwaDCI toll-free line, 0800 722 203, or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.

The agency assured the public that updates on the progress of the investigations will be provided as the inquiry continues.

DCI added that it is working closely with other agencies under the National Police Service and relevant institutions to prevent electoral violence, safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, and ensure all criminal acts committed during elections are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.

Chaos Experienced During the By- Elections

The investigations come days after armed men were captured driving several sport utility vehicles (SUVs)moving through the streets, firing shots into the air and patrolling areas near polling stations as voting in the parliamentary by-election was underway, triggering panic among residents.

According to videos seen by HiviLeo, a hooded man carrying a long rungu was seen dispersing people before boarding a moving SUV alongside another masked individual.

In another video, a man was shown standing on top of an SUV firing towards a crowd, while another person appeared to fire from the rear window of the same vehicle as it moved through the area.

As a result, the scenes sparked panic among residents, some of whom hid while recording the unfolding events as they urged those around them to remain silent and avoid drawing attention.
