Man Arrested as DCI Uncovers Illegal Sugar Repackaging Operation in Bungoma

A man has been arrested in Bungoma after detectives uncovered a suspected illegal sugar repackaging operation during an intelligence-led crackdown on uncustomed goods.

According to a statement dated August 26, detectives from the Operations Support Unit (OSU) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Bungoma South conducted the operation at Bukembe Shopping Centre in Bungoma South Sub-County.

The suspect, identified as Paul Mwangi, was arrested after detectives recovered more than 200 bags of sugar from the premises and a vehicle associated with him.

DCI Recover More Than 200 Bags of Sugar

DCI stated that detectives raided premises associated with Mwangi and recovered 76 bags of 50kg West Valley Sugar.

They also found nine bags of sugar that had already been repackaged in Chinese-branded sacks and 10 empty 50kg bags bearing the Mayuge Sugar brand, a Ugandan brand.

As a result, DCI suspected that the premises could have been used to repackage and rebrand sugar under different identities.

Additionally, detectives searched a white Nissan Vanette, registration number KDG 347E, linked to the suspect, and recovered 26 more bags of West Valley Sugar, which they believe the suspect intended to transport and distribute.

“ A search of a white Nissan Vanette, registration number KDG 347E, associated with the suspect, led to the recovery of an additional 26 bags of West Valley Sugar, believed to be destined for transportation and distribution,” read part of the notice.

More Sugar Recovered From Suspect’s Warehouse

The operation was then extended to a warehouse owned by Mwangi, located south of Bukembe Shopping Centre.

At the warehouse, detectives recovered 98 additional bags of 50kg West Valley Sugar and 1,700 empty 50kg bags bearing the West Valley Sugar brand, according to the DCI.

The agency said detectives recovered 200 bags of 50kg West Valley Sugar from the premises, vehicle and warehouse, in addition to nine bags that the suspect had already repackaged in Chinese-branded sacks.

The DCI said Crime Scene Investigation officers processed and documented the scene, while detectives secured all recovered items as exhibits to support further investigations.

Mwangi remains in custody as detectives investigate the group believed to be involved in the operation and seek to establish its supply and distribution networks.

Additionally, detectives said the operation forms part of its efforts to protect consumers, safeguard legitimate businesses and dismantle criminal networks involved in uncustomed and illicitly repackaged goods.
