Office Romance: Can Workplace Dating Affect Job Performance?
Share
It often starts with shared lunch breaks, quick chats between meetings, or working late on the same work project. Before long, a professional connection turns into something more personal and romantic, like office romance.
For many employees, the workplace has become one of the most common places to meet a romantic partner, which can either affect the workplace positively or negatively depending on how the employees handle the matter.
But while office romances can lead to lasting relationships, they also raise an important question: can dating a colleague affect job performance?
Office Romance
According to Human Resources professional Jeffar Mukoyani, who spoke to Hivileo.co.ke, he says romantic relationships are so common in the workplace nowadays due to the amount of time employees spend together in the office.
“Of late, dating in the professional environment has been on the increase; millennials and Gen Z will joke about “office boyfriends and office girlfriends,” he said.
He says workplace relationships remain a reality across many industries, with employees spending a significant portion of their time with colleagues.
The close interaction, teamwork, and shared goals that define modern workplaces can naturally create opportunities for people to form deeper personal and romantic connections.

“The reason colleagues fall in love more often in the workplace can be traced to time spent together both physically and emotionally; most people get to know each other much better in the workplace, and you can’t rule out observation of physical attributes that draw people together,” he says.
Success Of Office Dating
However, Mukoyani says the success of such relationships often depends on how professionally those involved conduct themselves.
“Does dating a colleague improve or reduce productivity and overall work performance? It is different in different scenarios; it can boost performance or reduce performance for different reasons,” he said.
While some couples manage to separate their personal lives from their responsibilities at work, others may face challenges that affect productivity, teamwork, and workplace dynamics.
“On the positive side, it feels good to have a supportive partner at the workplace, therefore boosting productivity. It increases engagement between the staff, and thus it boosts productivity,” he said.
“On the negative side. The relationship brings in a distraction to the workplace. And definitely reduces productivity,” he added.
Another concern he addressed is how workplace relationships affect the wider team.
How Office Romance Affects Work
When one partner supervises or evaluates the other, questions about fairness can arise even when no favouritism exists.
Perceived preferential treatment in promotions, performance reviews, or work assignments can damage trust among colleagues and create tension within teams.
“Challenges to employees would be, like, constant distractions at the workplace; the possibility of reduced work input is high, and the quality of work coming from the staff can be sub-standard.
In case of a fallout in the office between lovers. Teams can be dragged into the tension easily; for example, those with an allegiance to one member of the relationship can resent the partner who is having a problem with the other,” he said.
Additionally, Mukoyani says employers can easily cause losses for the company because of having an affair, which can distract them from doing work efficiently, which eventually causes losses.
“Employers can easily incur losses when work is not done well; customers can easily get poor services from the staff who are distracted at the workplace,” said Mukoyani.
How Office Dating Can Be Handled
Mukoyani also shed some light on how the workplace can handle romantic relationships at work to avoid conflict of interest and ensure peak productivity.
“Send them to an occupational therapist for counselling and therapy, provide non-biased rules on how the workplace relationships should work to ensure productivity does not fall short without interfering with the relationship,” Mukoyani said.
In addition, he said workplace relationships can come to an end, but he advises on a few ways employees can remain professional even after their romantic relationship has come to an end.
He says employees should be taken to counselling to address their issues so that their affairs can not affect work performance in any way.
“Relationships often end in resentment, and most of the resentment will often directly affect workplace productivity, not talking to each other affecting workflow, and many more.

Employees should at least be counselled professionally after a breakup to ensure they deal with their personal issues fully outside of the workplace,” he said.
For both employers and employees, the conversation is less about whether workplace dating should happen and more about how it can be managed responsibly without affecting the affairs of the company.
