Outrage and Support as Video of Two Men Kissing at JKIA Goes Viral

A video circulating on social media has sparked widespread reactions after showing a gay couple kissing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

The clip, which has been widely shared on X, appears to show two men embracing and kissing in a public area at the airport.

The video was recorded by an unknown individual and the identities of the individuals involved in it remain unknown.

The incident has triggered some reactions online, with a section of users expressing disapproval, while others have called for restraint in how the matter is discussed publicly.

Online Reactions

@NytoP2PMwangi, wrote, “Fvk you!! It is disgusting! This is Kenya, not Chicago.”

The reactions show Kenyans complaining and some even calling upon authorities to intervene because same sex marriage is illegal in Kenya.

Another user @ KennedyOdh… commented, “People supporting such nonsense here in the comment section makes me so worried as a father, so almost every man in Kenya now finds gays attractive.”

Apart from same sex marriage being illegal in Kenya, public display of emotions is also illegal according to the constitution.

PDA Is Illegal

This includes kissing, holding hands, hugging and even having conjugal rights in public spaces because it can make members of the public uncomfortable.

@SportlahK commented in Swahili, “Sijawai ona wanaume wa ufala kaa hawa na huyo dem n bestie wao nonsense,”

Some users were commenting on the video, saying that Africans do not do such stuff and more so, not in public spaces.

@OWaititu added, “This is so disgusting, how did our society turn into this…we are Africans. How do we raise our kids and why are we normalizing this shit ??? Something needs to be done.”

Authorities and airport management have not issued any official statement regarding the incident or the circulating video.

It also remains unclear whether any action was taken at the time the footage was recorded.

Kenya’s laws currently criminalise same sex relations under sections of the Penal Code, though public debate around the issue has continued to evolve in recent years.
