“Pay Attention to Africa”: Ruto Sends Strong Message to G7 Leaders

At the G7+ Working Session on Reviving a Balanced and Shared Growth for All, President William Ruto delivered a message urging global leaders to rethink their economic relationship with Africa.
He said the continent is central to the future of global growth and must be treated as a partner, not just a source of raw materials.
Ruto told leaders that Africa’s role in the global economy is rapidly expanding.
He pointed out that several of the world’s fastest-growing economies are in Africa and the continent’s population is set to rise significantly.
“Africa is central to the future of global growth and prosperity,” he said.
He added that within the next 25 years, one in four people in the world will be African, making the continent a major driver of global demand and labour supply.
Ruto: A Rising Workforce and Expanding Market
The President highlighted Africa’s demographic advantage, noting that by 2050, the continent will account for nearly 40% of the global workforce.
He also projected a market of more than 2.4 billion people.
He said global leaders must recognise that Africa is no longer a peripheral player but a key pillar of the world economy.
Ruto emphasised Africa’s vast natural resources, especially critical minerals needed for modern industries.
These include minerals used in:
- Electric mobility
- Clean energy systems
- Digital infrastructure
- Artificial intelligence
- Advanced manufacturing
He warned that Africa’s resources have often been exported with little local processing, limiting the continent’s growth.

Ending the Extraction Model
Ruto criticised the long-standing pattern where Africa exports raw materials without adding value locally.
“That model is no longer acceptable,” he said
Instead, he called for a shift toward industrialisation and value addition within Africa.
The President stressed that Africa is not seeking charity or one-sided deals. He said the continent wants partnerships based on equality and mutual respect.
“Africa is not seeking relationships that are extractive. We are seeking partnerships founded on sovereign equality, mutual respect, and shared prosperity.”
He urged global partners to support Africa in building industries, manufacturing goods, and creating jobs locally.

Building Value in Africa
Ruto proposed a new model of cooperation where Africa processes its own minerals and builds its own industries.
He called for:
- Local mineral processing
- Manufacturing within Africa
- Job creation on the continent
- Shared value through partnerships
He said this approach would benefit both Africa and global partners by strengthening supply chains and expanding markets.
Closing his remarks, Ruto delivered a direct appeal to world leaders.
“My message to the G7 is clear: pay attention to Africa.”
He added that the future of global growth will be shaped on the African continent and urged leaders to work together to build that future.
