A Long Political Legacy

Raila served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and made five unsuccessful attempts to become president.

He fought for multiparty democracy in 1991 and played a central role in shaping Kenya’s 2010 Constitution. His political journey also included years of detention under former President Daniel arap Moi.

His death triggered a nationwide response, with President William Ruto declaring seven days of national mourning. Raila was later accorded a state funeral at Nyayo National Stadium before his burial in Bondo.
