Several Feared Dead as Tanker Explodes Along Eldoret-Webuye Road

Two bodies have been recovered following a petroleum tanker accident near Paul Boit in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County, as rescue efforts continue at the scene.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Sicharani said rescue teams were still working at the scene following the incident, which occurred along the Eldoret-Webuye Road on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

The Kenya Red Cross said the incident was contained through a multi-agency response involving Kenya Police, firefighters, county ambulance services and other emergency responders.

In an update, the agency said 10 casualties were evacuated to various hospitals with help from well-wishers, county ambulance services, firefighters, and Kenya Red Cross responders.

The incident initially prompted a mass casualty response, with emergency teams deployed to assist those affected and secure the area.

“The incident was contained through a multi-agency response. 10 casualties have been evacuated to various hospitals, facilitated by well-wishers, County ambulance services, firefighters, and Kenya Red Cross,” Kenya Red Cross said.

Motorists Using Eldoret-Webuye Road Warned

Earlier, the agency issued an alert urging motorists to avoid the affected section of the road to allow emergency teams unhindered access to the scene.

Uasin Gishu Police Commander Wilberforce Sichirani also confirmed the incident and said rescue teams were still at the scene as officers worked to determine the number of casualties.

Sichirani said police had not yet established what triggered the explosion, with investigations underway to determine how the tanker caught fire.

“A mass casualty incident has occurred along the Eldoret-Webuye road near Paul Boit Secondary School, following a petroleum tanker explosion. Kenya Red Cross is on the ground responding in collaboration with Kenya Police and firefighters. We urge motorists to avoid the area to allow emergency response teams unhindered access,” read part of the statement.
