An anti-corruption raid in Iraq has drawn widespread attention after reports that authorities have recovered millions of dollars in cash and gold after raiding an MP’s home.

According to multiple media reports in Iraq, security forces searched the home of an Iraqi member of parliament, Hind Al-Abbasi. They allegedly discovered approximately $57 million in cash, 27 kilograms of gold, and items described as gold underwear.

However, Iraqi authorities have not officially confirmed the specific claims regarding the items reportedly recovered from Al-Abbasi’s residence.

The reported raid is part of a broader anti-corruption campaign which was launched by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, who took office with a pledge to combat corruption and recover public funds.

The nationwide operation has targeted lawmakers, senior bureaucrats and public officials suspected of involvement in financial crimes.

According to Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, separate investigations have already led to the seizure of tens of millions of dollars in cash, gold, properties, vehicles and other assets linked to corruption cases involving former government officials.

Items Seized

The Iraqi government has yet to verify the reported seizure of $57 million, 27 kilograms of gold or the alleged discovery of gold underwear at Hind’s residence.

Several news outlets in Iran have noted that official confirmation of those specific claims is still pending.

The anti-corruption campaign in Iran has been welcomed by some observers as one of the most significant corruption crackdowns in Iraq.

The latest developments come as Iraq continues to face longstanding concerns over corruption.
