Sonko Confirms Arrest of Suspect in Baby James’ Father Murder Case

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has confirmed the arrest of the main suspect linked to the brutal killing of Michael Omworo Ombui, the father of Baby James, in Mathare.

In a statement dated May 25, Sonko said that the suspect, identified as Ali, was arrested in Migori County, where he had been hiding following the incident.

“Ali, the main suspect who allegedly brutally stabbed to death the late Michael Omworo Ombui, father to Baby James, in Mathare while taking the child to school, has finally been arrested in Migori, where he was hiding,” said Sonko.

He described the killing as a brutal and painful incident, adding that he was particularly disturbed by reports of what allegedly happened immediately after the attack.

Sonko highlighted that the suspect allegedly kicked away a lunchbox containing food meant for Baby James, an act he described as deeply distressing.

“What broke my heart most was learning that after committing the heinous act, he allegedly went ahead and kicked away the lunchbox containing ugali and omena meant for Baby James’ lunch,” he added.

According to Sonko, the incident prompted him to take a personal interest in the case and follow up closely with relevant authorities to ensure there was progress in investigations.

He said his involvement was driven by the need to see justice delivered for the victim’s family.

Additionally,  Sonko commended officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) based in Ruaraka for their help in arresting the suspect.

“I sincerely thank the DCI officers based at Ruaraka for the good job, commitment, and swift action in ensuring all the suspects have now been brought to book,” he said.

Killing of Michael Omworo Ombui, Baby James ‘ father in Mathare

Michael Ombui, popularly remembered as Baby James’ father, was attacked in January 2025, in the Mathare Area 4 settlement.

He was walking his son to school in Mathare when thugs intercepted them, stabbing him to death in front of his son.

However, immediately after the incident was reported, Sonko expressed his desire to adopt the little boy.

Taking to social media, he announced that he had finally taken Baby James into his family and adopted him with the help of administration officials from Mathare.
