A unique grassroots fundraising campaign has gained momentum in Nyandarua County after a “Chokoraa” tag targeting Ol Kalou parliamentary aspirant Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, popularly known as Ngotho, sparked public sympathy, prompting more than 2,800 well-wishers to each contribute Ksh 10 to buy him a suit.
The initiative emerged after political opponents allegedly labelled the aspirant with a derogatory term, triggering widespread reaction and mobilizing supporters ahead of the by-election.
According to Nyandarua Senator John Methu, the campaign quickly evolved into a symbol of unity and resilience among residents.
“2,823 souls gave 10 shillings each to buy a suit for the swearing-in of the incomingOl Kalou MP Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, Ngotho. Moses Kuria called him a chokoraa and the people have decided to make lemonade out of the lemon,” Methu said.
Ol Kalou Movement Gains Emotional Momentum
He added that the initiative goes beyond financial contributions and continues to boost morale within the campaign.
“The 10 shillings movement really boosts our morale ahead of the 16th July moment of truth. It’s not the money, it’s the love,” he said
Meanwhile, videos circulating online show long queues of residents lining up to contribute, while the high volume of transactions temporarily overwhelmed the M-Pesa system.

Race Attracts Multiple Candidates
As public support grows, the Ol Kalou parliamentary race continues to draw nine candidates, setting up a tightly contested by-election.
For his part, Kamau, running on a DCP ticket, has pledged sweeping reforms, including direct disbursement of bursary funds to schools.
In comparison, UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah has promised development-focused leadership, while the Jubilee Party seeks to retain the seat previously held by former MP David Kiaraho, who won it in the 2022 General Election.
Contest Sees Unconventional Campaigns
At the same time, Timothy Kamau of the People’s Renaissance Movement grabbed attention when he rode a donkey to the IEBC offices during clearance, positioning himself as part of a new political wave.
Additionally, other candidates in the race include Edwin Muchiri (PNU), Stephen Wanyoike (National Liberal Party), Rachael Njoroge, Edward Mwaniki (Kenya Moja Movement), and Abdifatah Hussein (Federal Party of Kenya).
With campaigns now underway, UDA and DCP now battle to assert their dominance in the Mt Kenya region.
Ultimately, the Ksh10 campaign continues to add a symbolic and emotional edge to the race, making the Ol Kalou by-election one of the most closely watched political contests in the region.
