US President Donald Trump has said he expects the war with Iran to end shortly after the November midterm elections, suggesting the conflict could continue affecting energy markets until then.

Trump made the remarks on Saturday, September 12, while speaking to reporters in Dublin, Ireland, during a two-day visit that included meetings with Irish leaders.

He is also scheduled to visit his Doonbeg resort, where the Irish Open golf tournament is taking place.

“I think very soon. I think it’ll be probably right after the mid-terms. They’re trying to hold out as long as they can to complicate the election. But I think people are wise to it,” Trump said.

Trump Links Iran War to US Elections

According to Trump, Iran is trying to prolong the conflict until November, when Americans will vote in congressional elections that could determine which party controls Congress.

His latest prediction follows comments he made on Wednesday, September 9, when he said he expected the war to end immediately after the midterm elections.

Trump has also connected the conflict to rising energy costs and argued that oil prices would fall once the fighting stops.

Beyond the election timeline, the US president has maintained that his administration is pursuing wider objectives in the conflict.

Earlier this week, he indicated that negotiations with Tehran were not a priority for his government.

Trump Predicts Oil Prices Will Fall

Against that backdrop, Trump also linked the eventual end of the conflict to oil prices, predicting a sharp decline once the fighting stops.

“When that happens, oil prices will come tumbling down,” he said.

Meanwhile, the conflict has continued to disrupt energy supplies and shipping routes across the Middle East.

The Strait of Hormuz remains particularly important because of the large volumes of oil that pass through the waterway.

During his Dublin remarks, Trump said he remained confident that the situation around the Strait of Hormuz would be resolved positively.

His comments came as disruptions across the region continued to put pressure on global energy markets.

Saudi Pipeline Shutdown Raises Supply Concerns

Fresh developments on September 12, 2026  added another challenge for the oil market after Saudi Arabia temporarily shut its 1,200-kilometre East-West oil pipeline following a drone attack.

The pipeline had been carrying between four million and five million barrels of crude daily, providing Saudi Arabia with an alternative export route that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz.

Saudi authorities took the pipeline offline as they assessed the impact of the attack. The incident added to concerns over the security of infrastructure that helps move crude to international markets.

At the same time, Iran-backed Houthi forces have tightened their position around the Red Sea, creating further concerns for international shipping and energy supplies.

The group has also seized the strategic Perim Island near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, according to Reuters.
