Police in Isiolo North Sub-County have shot dead two suspected bandits after a livestock raid turned into a gunfight with the bandits in Leparua village.
According to police reports, the attackers targeted the homestead of Gitonga Mbatia before residents raised an alarm.
This prompted a swift response from security officers within the area.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when a group of about 20 armed men reportedly stormed the home of a resident with the intention of stealing his livestock.
A multi-agency security team comprising of officers from the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), anti-crime personnel and National Police Reservists (NPR) responded to the crime scene and engaged the suspects in a gunfight.
Authorities said the exchange of gunfire lasted for some time before the livestock raiders were overpowered, leaving two of the suspected bandits dead.
Police added that several other suspects are believed to have sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation as they escaped from the area.
Security teams later launched a pursuit operation and tracked the fleeing suspects towards the Tasia Hills area in the direction of neighbouring Laikipia County.
