United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is expected in Nairobi on May 10, 2026, ahead of the Africa Forward Summit that will bring together more than 30 African Heads of State, senior government officials, investors, and innovators.

The Africa Forward Summit 2026 will be held on May 11–12 in Nairobi and is jointly hosted by Kenya and France under the theme “Africa–France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth.”

António Guterres to Visit Kenya for UN Gigiri Expansion Launch

During his visit, Guterres is expected to preside over ceremonies linked to the expansion of the United Nations headquarters in Gigiri, a multi-million-dollar project that is expected to strengthen Nairobi’s position as one of the UN’s key global centres.

The expansion project, valued at about $340 million, includes the construction of six new office buildings and a 9,000-seat assembly hall at the Gigiri complex.

According to reports, four of the buildings are funded by the UN General Assembly, while two are financed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The new facilities will allow the Gigiri campus to accommodate nearly 600 more diplomats and UN staff.

These staff are expected to relocate from New York City as part of the organisation’s efforts to save costs.

The expansion is also tied to plans to move key global operations of agencies such as UNICEF, UNFPA, and UN Women to Nairobi by late 2026, further elevating Kenya’s role in international diplomacy and development operations.

Once completed, the Nairobi UN complex will continue to rank among the largest UN hubs globally alongside Geneva, Vienna, and New York.

Guterres’ visit comes as the United Nations faces growing financial pressure linked to declining contributions from some member states, including the United States of America (USA).

The UN chief has previously warned that the organisation is experiencing a liquidity crisis that threatens some of its operations globally.
