Nairobi City County continues to advance the construction of the Raila Odinga International Stadium at Jamhuri Grounds. The flagship project is set to reshape the capital’s position in global sports and entertainment.
In addition, the 60,000-seater world-class facility will host athletics, football matches, concerts, cultural festivals and major celebrations. The county says the project will boost Nairobi’s competitiveness in the global sporting and creative economy.
Meanwhile, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the stadium reflects the county’s ambition to position the capital as a global centre for sports and entertainment.
“Nairobi City County’s competitiveness in global athletics, football, international hub for concerts, cultural festivals and grand celebrations, positioning the county as a vital centre for global creativity and sporting economy,” Governor Sakaja said.
The project follows strict international football requirements. First, engineers designed the stadium to meet the Confederation of African Football (Confederation of African Football) standards. This requirement supports hosting continental competitions.
In addition, the design ensures compliance with key tournament regulations. As a result, it aligns with international expectations for stadium infrastructure.
Furthermore, the facility will support preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Africa Cup of Nations), which Kenya will co-host.
Sakaja said the design aligns with major international expectations.
“Built to meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards, Talanta Stadium is on the course to be the premier venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and other international sporting events, cementing the city’s place as a continental sports powerhouse,” he said.

Construction has now reached its final stage. Engineers have completed the main structure and now focus on finishing works, including seating, broadcast systems, lighting, and ICT installations.
“The project is in its final construction phase, with the superstructure complete and works focusing on the seat installation, broadcast systems, lighting, and final electrical and ICT fittings,” he added.

The county says the stadium reflects cooperation between national and county leadership aimed at improving sports infrastructure ahead of major tournaments.
“The construction of the iconic Talanta Stadium stems from President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s significant cooperation in the multi-billion shilling infrastructure project to build and upgrade several stadiums in Nairobi ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON),” Sakaja said.
Once completed, the stadium will strengthen Nairobi’s position as a leading destination for international sports, concerts and cultural events across Africa.
