Controversial Tanzania human rights activists Mange Kimambi and Maria Tsehai lost their META accounts after election protest posts.

Tanzanian activists, Mange Kimambi and Maria Tsehai, have raised alarms over the deactivation of their Meta accounts, arguing that the move silences the voices speaking out against human-rights violations in Tanzania.

“My META accounts, including my Instagram account, with the name Mangekimambi80 and Wananchiforum, as well as my WhatsApp account, were deactivated after I consistently used these platforms to expose corruption, kidnappings, and murder of protesting youths and opposition leaders in Tanzania,” she wrote

“Every post I made encouraged peaceful, non-violent civic engagement.”

Violence in the October 29 Elections

Kimambi highlighted that the general election that was held on October 29, 2025, caused protests across the country, especially among the Gen Z, which were met with lethal state force.

She said,” thousands of young Tanzanians were killed and many more wounded, as security forces responded with extreme violence.”

“Most Tanzanians view the president as illegitimate after the compromised election results .”

International observers, including the African Union, SADC, and the EU Parliament, have publicly condemned the election process and subsequent crackdown.

Restricted Access and Alleged Government Pressure

Kimambi noted that social media access in Tanzania has become increasingly restricted accessible, often requiring the use of VPNs.

“The fact that my colleague Maria Sarungi’s account can only be accessed via VPN is another indication that Meta might have been under pressure to suppress pro-democracy voices,” she said.

The activists warn that such measures suppress free speech, democracy, and human rights globally.

Call For U.S. Government Support

Mange, who has been living in the US since 2012, wrote a letter to President Trump.

In her letter to the U.S. authorities, Kimambi urged intervention to ensure META restores its accounts and pass a law safeguarding activists against the removal of obscure accounts.

“Millions of people advocating for democracy and human rights rely on Instagram, Facebook, X, and TikTok to have their voices heard,” she said.

“In today’s world, civic freedoms and personal safety communicate with each other, and personal safety often depends on digital communications technology. Companies must be held accountable.”
