Deputy President (DP) Kithure Kindiki has assured students at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) that the government is considering measures to enable them to access Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funding.
Speaking during the KMTC graduation on December 4, Kindiki said Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba raised concerns that KMTC students do not receive support from HELB like students in other higher institutions of learning.
“I have been told that KMTC students don’t get HELB loans. The CS has told me, and I want to inform you all that the government has listened to your plea,” Kindiki said.
He added that he plans to meet next week with key stakeholders, including the Treasury, Education, and Health Cabinet Secretaries, to provide feedback and work on a viable solution.
Kindiki explained that not all parents can afford to pay the fees required for education at KMTC.
“I am convinced that we must start supporting KMTC students through HELB. We are working on modalities, and I will be convening the relevant ministries and state departments to agree on a formula on how we can start KMTC students accessing funding, because not every parent can afford to pay for education at KMTC,” Kindiki stated.

Kindiki said the government will provide a framework to support KMTC students, just like it awards loans to students in universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVETs)
“In the next week, we will be able to provide a framework within which you will be supported. Just like we are supporting University and TVET students, KMTC students need to be supported,” he said.

Besides, Kindiki said the government will hire more KMCT trainers to improve the quality of education at the institutions.
He stated that the government will provide funds to operationalize the KMCT branches that have been built, but are still not being used.
Kindiki said there are 18 such campuses built by county governments and NG-CDF, but they cannot be used because they don’t have equipment.
