EPRA Exposes 10 Petrol Stations Selling Fake Fuel

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has listed 10 fuel stations that are non-compliant as of December 2025.

In a notice on December 31, EPRA said it conducted a total of 4,394 tests at 967 petroleum sites during the period between October and December 2025.

From the tests, 957 (98.97%) of the sites were found to be compliant. However, tests from 10 sites (1.03%) turned out to be non-compliant.

The non-compliant stations and sites, along with the nature of their violations, are as follows:

  1. Meridian Fuels Filling Station, Ngata (Nakuru) – Offered diesel adulterated with domestic kerosene. The station has since reopened after upgrading its products and paying KSh 140,144 in taxes and penalties.
  2. Local Truck No. KDL 383S (Taita Taveta) – Found ferrying diesel with high sulphur content adulterated with domestic kerosene. The truck has been impounded, and the matter is still in court.
  3. Alwazi Filling Station, Bukura (Kakamega) – Offered diesel adulterated with domestic kerosene. The station was closed.
  4. Eden Energy Service Station, Wote (Makueni) – Offered diesel meant for export. The station reopened after paying KSh 132,780 in penalties.

EPRA Impound Trucks and Yards

EPRA also impounded several trucks and sealed multiple petroleum storage yards as part of inspections.

  1. Local Truck No. KCQ (Mombasa) – Found ferrying diesel meant for export. The truck has been impounded, and the matter is still in court.
  2. Local Truck No. KCL 019Y in Likoni, Mombasa – Found ferrying diesel meant for export. The truck remains impounded.
  3. Diesel stored in jerrycans in four KRA Yards in Moyale, Marsabit – Diesel contained high sulphur, suspected to be smuggled. All jerrycans were impounded, and matters remain in court.

“The Authority maintains a hotline number (0709 366 000), operational during normal working hours, to enhance enforcement and compliance activities. Members of the public are requested to report suspected cases of petroleum fuel adulteration or export dumping through the hotline number, as well as use the Authority’s USSD code (*363#) and SMS service code (40850). Further, a list of all sites found with adulterated products is also available on the Authority’s website: www.epra.go.ke,” EPRA said.
