Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has strongly condemned the violent attack at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, his allies, and civilians were reportedly trapped as chaos erupted outside the place of worship.
In a statement released after the incident, Kalonzo described the attack as a shocking assault on both human life and Kenya’s constitutional order, warning that the country was veering toward dangerous political intolerance.
Kalonzo termed the incident “a grave and unacceptable violation of the Constitution and the rule of law,” noting that the reported use of live bullets, tear gas, and the torching of vehicles near the church crossed all legal and moral boundaries.
“A church is a sacred and protected space,” he said, adding that “the use of force against unarmed citizens in such circumstances is unlawful and indefensible.”
The opposition leader stressed that no Kenyan, regardless of political affiliation, should ever be subjected to violence especially in a place meant for prayer and refuge.
Speaking in a distressed message, the former deputy president claimed they were under attack while taking refuge at a church in Othaya.
He said they were trapped inside as security forces fired live bullets and lobbed tear gas, while vehicles parked nearby were set ablaze.

He appealed to the public to pray for their safety as they feared for their lives.
“William Ruto has sent a killer squad to kill us inside Wairima ACK Church, Othaya.”
Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa said,“let us all pray for the People’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, to come out of this ordeal alive.
What we are witnessing is deeply troubling and unacceptable in a democratic nation.
An attack on our leaders, places of worship, and innocent citizens is an attack on Kenya itself.
We condemn this violence in the strongest terms and call for calm, restraint, and respect for the rule of law.
God bless Kenya.”
Kalonzo directly placed responsibility on the leadership of the National Police Service, calling for accountability over the safety of those inside the church.
“I hold the Inspector General of Police and all those responsible fully accountable for the safety of Rigathi Gachagua, his team, and all civilians inside the church,” he stated.
His remarks come amid growing public concern over the conduct of security agencies during politically charged events.

Warning against the normalisation of political violence, Kalonzo said, “No political ambition or rivalry can ever justify terrorising citizens or attacking a place of worship.”
He concluded by urging the country to uphold democratic values, insisting that “Kenya must remain a constitutional democracy governed by law, not violence, fear, or impunity.”
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with calls mounting for investigations and restraint as political temperatures continue to rise.
