Senior Chief and Teacher Killed in Suspected Al Shabaab Attack

Share

A senior chief and a primary school teacher have been killed in a suspected Al Shabaab attack in Hulugho town, Garissa County, deepening fears over persistent insecurity in Kenya’s north eastern region.

Police said the two public servants were targeted in an overnight assault, adding to a growing list of civilian and government officials killed in attacks linked to the Somalia-based militant group.

The senior chief, who served as the Chief of Boma Location, and the teacher were reportedly ambushed at their homes during the night.

The incident has shocked residents of Hulugho, a town that has previously experienced security threats due to its proximity to the Kenya–Somalia border.

Police said investigations were immediately launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings and to pursue the perpetrators.

The attack once again highlights the vulnerability of frontline public servants in remote areas, particularly administrators and teachers who continue to work under difficult and often dangerous conditions.

Community members described the two victims as dedicated public servants whose deaths leave a significant gap in local leadership and education.

Condolences and Political Reaction

Confirming the incident, Garissa Member of Parliament Edo Udgoon Siyad described the killings as a major blow to the community.

“I send my condolences to the families of Chief Abdi Gani Owl and the dedicated teacher, both of whom served the Hulugho community with unwavering commitment,” Siyad said.

She further stated, “We condemn this senseless violence and stand united in support of all affected. May Chief Gani rest in Jannatul Firdaus, and may the teacher’s family find strength and peace.”

Local leaders echoed the sentiments, calling for enhanced security operations and better protection for civilians and state officers in the region.

Rising Insecurity in North Eastern Region

The latest killings come amid renewed concern over Al Shabaab attacks on civilians, police officers, and military personnel in north eastern Kenya.

The region has repeatedly been targeted due to its long, porous border with Somalia, which militants exploit to launch cross-border attacks.

Security agencies have in recent months intensified patrols and surveillance along the border.

Two months ago, several suspected militants were gunned down while allegedly attempting to infiltrate Kenya.

In a statement on Sunday, November 30, 2025, the Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya said the group had been detected under the cover of darkness by specialised officers deployed along the border.

“A group of terrorists attempted to infiltrate our border. Our Special teams manning our border taught them a lesson. Our superior firepower and committed officers will always win against the enemies of our nation,” the Anti Terrorism Unit revealed.
