The Government has announced a tax waiver on the importation of dates in a move to support the Muslim community during the upcoming Holy Month of Ramadan.
The directive, issued by the National Treasury on Friday, January 30, 2026, aims to ensure that the essential fruit remains affordable and accessible for millions of Kenyans as they prepare for the fasting period, which is expected to commence on February 19, 2026.
“We convey our sincere appreciation to H.E. President @WilliamsRuto for the Government’s steadfast support and solidarity with Kenya’s Muslim community through the waiver on the importation of dates ahead of the Holy Month of Ramadan, expected to begin on 19th February, 2026,” CS Duale said on a post on his X page.
He added, “This thoughtful intervention enhances the availability and affordability of dates for Iftar and underscores the Government’s commitment to religious inclusivity, mutual respect and the strengthening of national unity.”

In a letter dated January 16, 2026, Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury, Hon. FCPA John Mbadi Ng’ongo, authorized the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to facilitate the waiver following a request from the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) and deliberations on national food security.
“Reference is made to a letter Ref. ODP/ADM.1/93 VOL.VII (80) dated 17th December 2025 from the Office of The Deputy President, arising from deliberations during the Consultative Meeting on drought mitigation, food security, and protection of vulnerable populations which underscored the need to facilitate early importation and availability of dates ahead of Ramadan 2026,” John Mbadi said on a notice.
The Treasury has instructed KRA Commissioner General Mr. Humphrey W. Mulongo to expedite the clearance of date consignments in order to guarantee the benefits reach the final consumer.
