Njoro Girls Closed Indefinitely After Student’s Death

Share

Njoro Girls Senior School in Nakuru County has been closed indefinitely following protests over the death of 18-year-old Form Four student, Brenda Akinyi.

The closure comes after parents and residents demanded answers about how the school handled her illness, with many accusing the institution of negligence.

Police intervened to disperse the demonstrators, resulting in a brief standoff as tensions escalated.

Brenda passed away at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital after reportedly falling ill while at school.

Her family claims they were not informed promptly about her condition, despite living a short distance from the institution.

Brenda’s brother, Allan Otieno, told Citizen TV:

“I was called from work. When I arrived at school, I was told by her friends that your sister was sick.”

“On asking who knew if the child was sick or if the school nurse knew, the students said yes, she knew. Does the deputy know? Yes, she knows. How about the matron? Yes, she’s aware. And why has she not called home? The students told me that she was being treated at school. The kid got sick for three days, and they just gave her Brufen,” he said

Brenda’s mother, Millicent Anyango, also spoke to the media, saying:

“When asked by the doctor, she said the child claimed to have a little headache and was given Brufen. I was supposed to be informed later about my daughter’s progress. They delayed calling me to pick up my child and take her to the hospital. For me, they should just help me do the postmortem so I can know what killed her and she can be buried peacefully.”

Parents Demand Independent Investigation

Some parents who joined the protests alleged that Brenda’s case may not be isolated, claiming that other students had died under similar circumstances in recent years.

They called for an independent inquiry into the school’s handling of student health emergencies, stressing the need for accountability.

Education Officials Respond

The Nakuru County Director of Education dismissed claims of negligence, stating that preliminary records indicate Brenda had a history of illness.

Officials said due process would be followed to establish the facts surrounding her death.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death as investigations continue.
