Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has refused to leave his position as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Secretary General despite being kicked out by members of the National Executive Committee.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, February 12, 2026, Sifuna maintained that his ouster was unconstitutional and did not follow due process as outlined in the party constitution.
He alleged that sections of the party leadership had reduced ODM to an appendage of State House, with major decisions allegedly being made under the influence of the current regime.
“It is painful to note that sections of the party continue to desecrate the legacy and memory of Raila by turning this party into a theatre of the illegal,” Sifuna said.
The Nairobi Senator referenced a Gazette notice issued on February 3 that sought to legitimise recent changes in party leadership and invited public input within seven days. He questioned the legality of the process, arguing that the timeline had already lapsed weeks before the notice was published.
Sifuna further alleged that the installation of the new party leader, Dr Oburu Odinga, was carried out “unprocedurally and unconstitutionally,” describing the developments as shortcuts that undermine progressive institutions.

He insisted that his resistance was not about holding onto office but about protecting the integrity of the party.
“This is not about positions. It is about principle. It is about ensuring that ODM remains a democratic institution governed by rules and not by impulses,” he said.
The Senator vowed to challenge his removal through lawful means, including seeking redress in court.
“We will challenge every illegality in the courts of law and in the court of public opinion. Surrender is not an option for us,” he declared.
He urged ODM members across the country to remain calm and committed to the party’s founding ideals of justice, transparency, and constitutionalism.
Sifuna reaffirmed his loyalty to the party and to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, stating that he remains the duly elected Secretary General.
“I remain a loyal member and the duly elected Secretary General of the ODM party. I remain committed to the struggle for a fair, just, and democratic Kenya,” he said.
