From Newsrooms to Ballots: Kenyan Journalists Eyeing Political Seats in 2027

Share

Several journalists are increasingly being linked to political ambitions as the country slowly begins to warm up for the 2027 Kenyan General Election.

For years, journalists have been known for questioning leaders, reporting political developments, and informing the public.

However, a number of well-known media personalities are now reportedly considering stepping into elective politics themselves.

Among those whose names have emerged is Mike Njenga, who is said to be eyeing the Kabete parliamentary seat.

At the Coast, popular news anchor Lulu Hassan has also been linked to a possible bid for the Mvita constituency seat.

In western Kenya, Trevor Ombija has been associated with the Nyakach parliamentary race, while media personality Willis Raburu is reportedly exploring a run for the Kisumu senatorial seat.

Coast and Nairobi Journalists Also Linked to Seats

Back in Nairobi, journalist Tina Ogal has been mentioned in discussions surrounding the Embakasi East parliamentary seat.

At the Coast, radio and television presenter Alex Mwakideu is reportedly eyeing the Kilifi gubernatorial seat.

Other journalists whose names have surfaced include Mwanahamisi Hamadi for the Likoni parliamentary seat and Stephen Letoo, who is said to be considering the Kilgoris parliamentary race.

Also mentioned in political conversations is Abdikarim Hussein, who is reportedly interested in contesting for the Eastleigh North parliamentary seat.

Ombija Responds to Political Speculation

However, Trevor Ombija has previously dismissed speculation linking him to a political bid. Addressing the rumours, saying not everything is about politics.

“Just because you are helping people or engaging in community activities does not mean you want to run for a political seat,” Ombija said.

Some Journalists Dismiss Political Rumours

Meanwhile, Lulu Hassan has also dismissed claims that she is planning to leave the newsroom for politics after a viral billboard suggested she would contest for the Mvita parliamentary seat.

Responding to the image circulating online, she said, “No, this is AI.”

With the 2027 elections still some time away, it remains to be seen which of the media personalities will officially declare their candidacy and transition from covering politics to actively participating in it.
