President William Ruto has officially handed over keys to residents of the newly built affordable housing units at Milimani Boma Yangu Estate Phase I in Kakamega County.
The project, implemented by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, includes 220 residential units, with over 180 homes already allocated to beneficiaries. The handover event drew local leaders, residents and officials from the housing ministry.
During the ceremony, President Ruto emphasized the importance of the housing programme in transforming communities. He noted that the initiative not only provides shelter but also creates employment opportunities for local artisans, masons and other workers involved in construction.
“Providing decent and affordable homes is not just about shelter; it is about dignity, creating opportunities, and improving lives. This initiative ensures that ordinary Kenyans can access quality housing regardless of their income level.” Ruto Said.
The president handed over keys to more than 180 families, who expressed excitement about finally owning homes of their own. He stated that the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving living standards while also stimulating local economic growth.
“Every home built here represents livelihoods supported and skills developed. Our housing programme is not just about bricks and mortar; it is about transforming communities and creating economic opportunities.” President Ruto added.
The estate includes essential amenities such as internal roads, street lighting, parking areas, and landscaped green spaces designed to enhance the quality of life for residents.

Phase II is scheduled for completion by December 2027, reinforcing the government’s nationwide agenda for affordable housing.
