Kenya is mourning the passing of veteran educationist and politician Daniel Karaba, who has died after years of service in both the academic and political spheres.
The death of the former Senator and one-time Kirinyaga Central Member of Parliament was formally confirmed on Monday 23 March, through a public statement issued by Anne Waiguru, sending shockwaves across the county and beyond.
“We have lost a distinguished son of Kirinyaga, Hon. Daniel Karaba, whose life was defined by service, humility, and a deep commitment to education and leadership. Mwalimu Karaba built a remarkable career as a teacher, principal, and education leader before serving as a two-term Member of Parliament for Kirinyaga Central and later as Senator,” Governor Anne Waiguru stated.
Karaba was born in 1948 in Kiamaina village in Kirinyaga County.
This is where his early life was shaped. Growing up in a rural area gave him a strong foundation academically.
Karaba started his primary education in his village.
After his primary education, he proceeded to his secondary education.
This was followed by his advanced studies at Kagumo High School.
This was one of the best schools in Central Kenya at the time.
Karaba’s academic career was completed at the University of Nairobi.
This is where he graduated with a degree in Education. This would set the tone for his future career.

Karaba’s professional career started in the classroom.
Over time, he advanced through the ranks to become a senior administrator.
Karaba worked in different schools as a deputy principal and later a principal.
This was in the various roles that involved the academic direction of these schools.
Karaba’s role was not limited to individual schools.
Between 1984 and 1998, he chaired the national association that represented heads in secondary schools.
This made him the epicenter of everything related to the country’s education system.
During this period, he championed the interests of teachers, school management, and education system reforms.
After a successful career that spanned many years in the education sector, Karaba entered politics.
He was elected to Parliament to represent Kirinyaga Central Constituency on a National Rainbow Coalition ticket in 2002.
He mainly concentrated on issues touching on education during his time at the National Assembly.
This was because of his background, which allowed him to make meaningful contributions to issues touching on learning institutions.
He has had some electoral challenges, including an election that was nullified.
He lost a by-election that was held to fill the position. However, he has been active within his region.
