A multi-agency team on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, exhumed 33 bodies from a suspected mass grave in Kericho, in a development that has shocked the nation.
Initial reports had indicated that only 14 bodies were buried at the site, but the exercise revealed a much larger and more disturbing reality.
Among the remains recovered were 25 children and eight adults, alongside six dismembered body parts, including both upper and lower limbs.
Authorities overseeing the exercise indicated that the burials may not have occurred at the same time, raising further questions about the origins of the bodies.
“Recent findings at Kericho Cemetery have revealed the presence of multiple human remains under circumstances suggesting varied timelines and possible external sources,” officials said.
The exhumation process was conducted under the supervision of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), alongside government pathologists.

Preliminary findings confirmed that the majority of the victims were minors, intensifying public concern and outrage.
Earlier assessments showed that 25 of the 33 bodies were underage, with only eight identified as adults-an alarming statistic that has triggered calls for urgent investigations.
Officials from the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) and human rights activists were present during the exercise, calling for a thorough and transparent investigation.
Hussein Khalid, Executive Director of Vocal Africa, urged authorities to uncover the truth behind the burials:
“Lazima ukweli uweze kujulikana hawa ni kina nani waliozikwa hapa, walizikwa hapa kwa sababu gani na hawa wenyewe walikufa vipi.”
Tony Were also emphasized the need for urgency and professionalism:
“We need the government to move with speed so that these cases of mysterious deaths or unclaimed bodies can be handled professionally.”
Activists are now pushing for independent oversight bodies to step in and ensure accountability if foul play is established.
They have called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to conduct parallel investigations alongside police inquiries.
Local leaders are also demanding clarity from both county and national governments regarding the identities of those buried and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Allan Kiombe of Jesus Centre Church in Kericho questioned the lack of communication:
“The county and national government watuambie hawa wamezikwa hapa ni kina nani na nani aliwaleta na ni kwa nini hakujakuwa na proper communication.”

The case, first reported by grave diggers who noticed suspicious activity at the cemetery, has since escalated into a major investigation led by the National Police Service.
While preliminary reports suggested the bodies may have originated from Nyamira District Referral Hospital as unclaimed remains, the scale, presence of minors, and discovery of dismembered parts have intensified examination.
As investigations continue, the public now awaits an official statement to stay informed on the identities of the victims, the cause of death, and whether any criminal wrongdoing was involved.
