The whole country is facing a growing flood crisis as heavy rains continue across many areas, causing landslides, forcing thousands of people to leave their homes, and damaging important roads and infrastructure.
Authorities through NPS have confirmed that at least 88 people have lost their lives due to flood-related incidents as of March 24, 2026.
The devastating impact was felt in Kilungu Sub-County, Makueni County, where a landslide tragically killed two children and left four others injured.
Officials described the situation as dire, noting that the ongoing rains have significantly increased the risk of landslides and flash floods in vulnerable areas.
Thousands Displaced as Floodwaters Wreak Havoc
The floods have displaced at least 2,690 families, many of whom are now sheltering in temporary evacuation centres set up across affected regions.
“Multi-agency teams are on high alert, continuing with search and rescue operations while also providing humanitarian assistance to affected families,” authorities said.

The situation remains fluid, with more areas reporting flooding as rivers overflow and drainage systems become overwhelmed.
Infrastructure Damage Alters Rescue Efforts
Heavy rains have caused extensive damage to roads and bridges, rendering many routes impassable.
This has significantly altered rescue and relief operations, delaying aid delivery to some of the hardest-hit communities.
Emergency responders are working around the clock to restore access to critical infrastructure and reach isolated areas.
Authorities Urge Vigilance and Caution
The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor the evolving weather patterns and has urged the public to stay updated through official forecasts and alerts.

Police have also issued a strong warning to Kenyans, urging them to take precautionary measures seriously.
“Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution,” the authorities said.
They further cautioned:
- Do not attempt to cross flooded rivers
- Avoid driving through moving water
- Relocate immediately from high-risk areas when advised to do so
