Police Swing Into Action with New Measures After Deadly Nyeri–Nyahururu Highway Accident

A tragic road accident that happened along the Nyeri–Nyahururu Road has claimed the lives of 15 people, and the National Police Service has swiftly responded to the tragic accident, urging road users to exercise vigilance on the road.

The accident, which occurred on March 28, 2026, involved a lorry and a PSV, causing loss of life while others are injured and hospitalized.

National Police Service confirmed the tragic accident in a press statement issued by the Office of the Inspector General and described it as a “tragic road traffic accident.”

Victims were rushed to various hospitals where they are undergoing treatment.

Police extended their deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the affected and urged them not to lose hope.

They said, “The National Police Service extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the deceased and wishes the injured a swift and full recovery.”

Investigations Launched into Fatal Collision

Following the accident, the National Police Service announced that it had “launched a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding this unfortunate incident.”

Police officers are working collaboratively with other relevant agencies to establish the cause of the accident, including whether it was caused by human, mechanical, or road factors.

The process of investigation is also expected to take into consideration the collection of information from witnesses, inspection of wreckage, and movement of vehicles on a busy highway, which was previously recognized as a high-risk highway.

Renewed Call for Road Safety Responsibility

Even as investigations continue, authorities have issued a strong reminder to all road users about their obligations.

“We remind all motorists, pedestrians, and other road users of their fundamental duty and personal responsibility to exercise due care, caution and good judgment while using the roads,” the statement read.

Traffic police officers, working in collaboration with enforcement agencies, have pledged to intensify operations to ensure compliance with the Highway Code.

The National Police Service noted that “enforcement efforts will remain steadfast in maintaining safety, order, and efficiency on Kenya’s roads.”

Public Urged to Assist with Information

The police have also appealed to the public to play an active role in the investigation.

“We call upon all stakeholders, including the general public, to cooperate with all enforcement agencies as we work to enhance road safety and bring an end to these preventable tragedies,” the statement added.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators has been urged to report to the nearest police station or use designated communication channels.
