Share

Garissa County authorities are investigating a reported incident where a school bus ferrying students from Alinjugur Secondary School was hit by an explosive device near Hagadera Refugee Camp on the morning of Sunday, March 29, 2026.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m., and as a result, two students sustained minor injuries, while eight teachers accompanying them on the bus remained unscathed.

Injured students were taken to a nearby hospital, where they received medical attention and were discharged, according to authorities.

Students, however, seemed shaken but alive, according to eyewitnesses.

According to eyewitnesses, the blast occurred after the school bus had moved over the explosive device, causing damage to the vehicle’s windows.

Damage to the glass panels of the vehicle, as seen in images from the scene, is a testament to the blast’s force.

The Security Agencies Respond, and Suspects Flee

The police, along with other security agencies, responded to the scene of the incident.

Police pursued three suspects who were thought to be associated with the attack, but they escaped into the thickets.

The bus was then taken to a local police station for further investigation.

The authorities confirmed that investigations are in progress, with a senior police official stating that they are intensifying patrols and intelligence-gathering to prevent further incidents in this area.

Persistent Threats in Northern Kenya

The blast is also an indication of the presence of al-Shabaab operatives in parts of Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, and Lamu counties despite intensified security operations.

Past operations have been effective in foiling several planned attacks.

However, the fact that Kenya shares an open border with Somalia enables al-Shabaab operatives to move undetected and return to their hideouts.

Residents in affected counties have decried the difficulty in conducting normal business in counties that have been frequently attacked by terror strikes.

Some have also accused some of the attacks of being conducted with insider assistance or having insiders, making it difficult for authorities to combat terror in Kenya.

The region has been in chaos since the overthrow of Somalia’s President, Siad Barre, in 1991.

To address the situation, Kenya launched Operation Linda Nchi in 2011.

The operation sought to ensure security along the Kenya-Somalia border following the abduction of tourists in parts of the coast.
