Share

Senator Osotsi was violently attacked and injured in Kisumu on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, prompting an urgent airlift to Nairobi for medical attention.

The assault occurred while the lawmaker visited a local barber for a haircut.

Speaking on the incident, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna said, “I have spoken to Senator Osotsi’s team and confirmed that he was viciously attacked and injured in Kisumu earlier today when he went to get a haircut. The Senator is being airlifted to Nairobi as we speak.”

Sifuna further condemned the attack, calling for swift action from law enforcement.

“Whilst we wait for further details, I strongly condemn this attack and ask the Police for immediate action on those responsible,” he added.

Public Outcry Over Political Violence

“Can we say some of our Luo Nyanza politicians can be nincompoop to this length hiring goons to attack leaders whom they are not together with? That’s wrong and totally unacceptable,” wrote X user @Sammy, criticizing the apparent targeting of leaders across party lines.

“This is deeply disturbing and unacceptable. No leader should be subjected to such violence in broad daylight. An attack of this nature raises serious concerns about safety, law and order, and the growing culture of impunity. As we wish Senator Osotsi a swift recovery, the police must act swiftly and decisively to identify and apprehend those responsible,” urged @AbalaWilliam.

Ethnic and Socio-Political Repercussions

The assault has been interpreted by some as an attack on the broader Luhya community.

“The attack on Senator Osotsi is a direct assault on the Luhya community and our collective interests. We will not forget this cowardice. Any attempt to destabilize our leadership is a declaration of war against our socio-economic security. Justice must be swift,” stated @Olieka1, framing the incident as more than an isolated act of violence.

Other reactions focused on the disparities in healthcare access.

“Vihiga County Senator getting a haircut in Kisumu County, and treatment in Nairobi County? What an irony,” remarked @VinyKe.

@Papa Mwendwa added that, “Heri yeye anaeza kuwa airlifted to Nairobi. Majority of Kenyans can’t afford such a luxury when they are in need of dire medical attention.”

Historical and Political Context

Some observers used the incident to reflect on historical political tensions in the region.

“Why are you disturbed? You kept quiet all the years that this was being fermented by your political idol. It will take two full generations to undo, civilize, and decolonize that region. Pray that there is not a similar replacement,” noted @RidgeGalana, hinting at long-standing local grievances and political rivalries.

Police are yet to release a full report on the circumstances of the attack.
