The system was launched in a ceremony that was attended by stakeholders from the private and public sectors, thus indicating the concerted efforts by all concerned parties to introduce innovation into tourism.

Prof. Erustus Kanga, the Director General of the Kenya Wildlife Service, attended the launch ceremony alongside other tourism actors.

This event was held under the supervision of the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Hon. Rebecca Miano.

Therefore, through this move, there are intentions to provide efficient services to tourists coming into the country as well as those from other parts of the world.

The launch ceremony emphasized innovation as a critical component of developing a better tourism sector in Kenya.

In regard to this, it was said that “TouristTap is a forward-looking innovation developed by Craft Silicon in collaboration with KCB Group and Visa Inc.”

A Seamless Payment Solution for Contemporary Travellers

TouristTap is built with the aim of solving the existing payment issues faced by tourists, thus providing a seamless and cash-free process.

The system allows international tourists to conduct safe and contactless transactions using their cell phones, minimizing cash-based transactions, ATMs, or even local cellular networks.

According to the parties involved, “The application facilitates secure, contactless payments by tourists directly through their mobile phones, eliminating cash payments, ATM use, and local cellular network requirements.”

Enhancing Local Business and Economic Contribution

“Beyond simplifying payments for tourists, the platform seeks to support everyone in Kenya’s tourism industry, from major tourism companies to micro-businesses,” the stakeholders agreed.

The platform will help smaller players in the industry become part of the economy through better transaction mechanisms, thus boosting their income streams from tourism activities.

This strategy is vital in ensuring maximum gains from tourism activities among locals.

Tourism continues to be an integral part of the Kenyan economy, providing roughly Ksh 500 billion in 2025 and employing nearly 1.6 million Kenyans.
