100-Year-Old Killed in Chaos After Ksh 200 Giveaway at Presidential Event

A 100-year-old man, Mzee Ombuyi Orandi, lost his life during a scramble for Ksh 200 after walking 3 km to see the president.

The incident has raised concerns, prompting people on X (Twitter) to question the safety of large political gatherings.

According to reports, the elderly man was caught up in the chaos as crowds began dispersing after the meeting on Sunday.

Witnesses said hundreds of residents had turned up for the event, which attracted a large crowd from surrounding areas.

Mzee Orandi is reported to have fallen during the rush as people pushed to leave the venue, leading to the fatal injuries.

Members of the public and the emergency unit rushed to save him, but he was pronounced dead.

Public Safety Concerns Escalate After Tragic Stampede

Police had not immediately released a statement on the deceased or confirmed whether other people were injured during the incident.

Authorities were yet to state what may have triggered the stampede.

Residents who spoke after the accident described scenes of confusion as people scrambled to exit the crowded Centre once the event ended.

Some blamed poor crowd management and limited access routes, saying organisers should have planned better for the large turnout.

Crowd Safety After Events

Residents raised awareness, stating how crowd movement after events can become difficult, especially in trading centres and open grounds with narrow roads or limited exits

The local leaders also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and urged event organisers to prioritise safety in future gatherings.

They said the loss of a centenarian in such circumstances was heartbreaking and avoidable.

President Ruto has been conducting a series of development tours across different parts of the country, where he addresses residents and launches government projects.

Sunday’s tragedy now has organizers, security personnel, and emergency teams coordinating more strongly whenever large crowds are expected

The deceased’s body was moved to a local mortuary pending identification and postmortem procedures.

As investigations continue, residents in Kisii County are mourning the elderly man whose life ended moments after attending a national event meant to unite and inspire the community.
