IEBC Opens Temporary Election Jobs Ahead of By-Elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dismissed allegations suggesting that certain political actors plan to interfere with or manipulate the 2027 General Election through extra-legal means.

In a press release dated May 26, 2026, the Commission raised concern over recent public statements that it said create fear and confusion within the electoral environment.

IEBC warned that such claims undermine trust in democratic processes and distort public perception of elections.

“The utterances are clearly intended to instill fear, mislead the public and erode confidence in the integrity of the electoral system. IEBC, therefore, urges all Kenyans to disregard, dissociate and refrain from amplifying them,” IEBC stated.

IEBC stressed that these claims distort public understanding of the electoral process.

Additionally, the Commission warned political leaders against issuing unverified or inflammatory statements that could mislead voters ahead of the 2027 polls.

It urged all stakeholders to protect confidence in Kenya’s democratic institutions.

IEBC Reaffirms Constitutional Mandate

IEBC further emphasized that the Constitution of Kenya vests the management of elections solely in the Commission.

It reaffirmed its legal authority and rejected any suggestion that external actors can influence or share its mandate.

“For avoidance of doubt, the duty and responsibility of conducting and supervising elections in Kenya is exclusively vested in the IEBC under Article 88 of the Constitution of Kenya. This mandate is not shared with, nor can it be usurped by, any individual, institution or political actors,” IEBC added.

The Commission also clarified the legal position on the Electoral Code of Conduct. It explained that the Code does not operate outside an active election period.

Furthermore, it referenced legal interpretation confirming that the framework applies only within an officially declared electoral cycle.

IEBC noted that it has not declared the 2027 General Election, and it has not published any official election timetable.

As a result, it cautioned political actors against premature campaigns and rhetoric that could weaken public confidence and distract from national preparedness.

IEBC urges Voter Participation and Commitment to Democracy

In addition, the Commission confirmed that it will engage relevant authorities to address individuals spreading false claims about electoral manipulation.

It urged political actors to focus on strengthening democratic institutions rather than promoting allegations of rigging.

IEBC also encouraged eligible citizens to take part in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

It said registration continues at constituency offices, Huduma Centres across the country, and the Customer Care Centre at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.

Moreover, it called on voters to register early and prepare for active participation in the 2027 General Election as a constitutional right. The Commission further appealed for calm, unity, and respect for institutional independence.

Finally, IEBC reaffirmed its commitment to deliver a free, fair, and credible election in line with Kenyan law and international best practice.

It assured the public that it would safeguard transparency, integrity, and independence throughout the electoral process.
