Kenya Met Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert Across Several Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather forecast following the rains experienced in some parts of the country, including Nairobi, where showers were recorded on Friday, April 17, 2026.

In its forecast for the period between April 18 and April 22, 2026, Kenya Met has warned of heavy rainfall in several parts of the country during the forecast period.

According to the department, rainfall is expected to continue in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Coast, and Northeastern Kenya.

Isolated heavy rainfall events are also likely to occur in some parts of the Coast and Northeastern Kenya.

Kenya Met Weather Forecast for Three Regions

According to Kenya Met, regions in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley are likely to experience mornings with sunny intervals throughout the forecast period, while afternoons will be characterised by showers and thunderstorms.

Nights will be mostly partly cloudy, except on Saturday, April 18, when a few areas are expected to receive showers.

Areas in these regions include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot counties.

In the northwestern region, which includes Turkana and Samburu counties, sunny intervals are expected to dominate both mornings and afternoons throughout the forecast period, while nights will be mostly partly cloudy. However, on Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, a few places may experience showers.

Weather Forecast for Nairobi and its Environs

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and its environs, mornings are likely to be cloudy with sunny intervals, although some mornings may experience rainfall in a few places. Afternoons will mostly have showers in some areas, except on Saturday when showers and thunderstorms are expected.

Nights will mostly be dominated by showers in a few places.

Other counties in this region include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

For the Northeastern region, which includes Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties, mornings are expected to experience rainfall in a few places. Afternoons will mostly have showers in some areas, except on Saturday when showers and thunderstorms are likely.

Nights will mostly be dominated by showers in a few places.

In the Southeastern lowlands, which comprise Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, mornings will experience rainfall in a few places. Afternoons will have a chance of showers in some areas, except on Saturday when showers and thunderstorms are expected, while nights will also have showers in some places.

In the Coast region, which includes Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, as well as the Tana Delta, mornings and afternoons are expected to experience showers in a few places. Nights will be mostly partly cloudy, except on Sunday, April 19, and Tuesday, April 21, when a few areas are likely to receive showers.
