A family in Mombasa County has called for a speedy and conclusive investigation into the killing of their kin, a security guard who was attacked by a machete-wielding gang in Bamburi.
The deceased, identified as Kurat ole Manini, was reportedly killed after more than 100 individuals invaded contested land he was guarding.
The attack also left four other people nursing serious injuries.
According to the family and members of the Maa community living in Mombasa, the attackers pursued the guards even after they realized the assignment involved disputed land.
Samuel ole Mairo, spokesperson for the Maa community, alleged that the attackers deliberately pursued the guards despite some attempting to withdraw from the job.
“They had been called for work, but when they realized the job involved a land dispute, some left on their own. However, the group continued to chase them, and the one who was killed was followed for about a kilometre ahead, which suggests there may have been a grudge,” he said.
The family described the late Kurat as the sole breadwinner and expressed frustration that no arrests had been made five days after the incident was reported to authorities.

Family members said the 33-year-old security guard leaves behind four young children who depended on him for survival.
One family member, Sheila Lengala, urged investigators to use available legal documents linked to the disputed land to identify suspects.
“They say the land has a court order, and that order must contain the names of those who reported the land case to court. Authorities should follow those individuals one by one,” she said.
Another relative mourned the loss, saying:
“He was killed while still a young man at work, and he has left behind very young children. He had four children.”
Members of the Maa community gathered during burial preparations and appealed to police to act swiftly.
“Today we have gathered here for the burial, but I would like to urge the police department to conduct investigations and arrest the youths who carried out this act,” a community member said.

Another community member expressed the deep pain felt within the community, noting that many had moved to the region in search of work.
“It is very painful for our community. We came here looking for work, but now we are returning home in coffins,” he said.
Kisauni Sub-County Commissioner Jamlick Mbuba confirmed that the matter is under active investigation and appealed to members of the public to share any useful information.
“My message is that anyone with information should alert the police to help us reach the root of the investigation. Reports can be submitted to the DCI office at Bamburi Police Station,” Mbuba said.
Mbuba also issued a stern warning to land grabbers operating in the region, stating that authorities are closely monitoring illegal land activities and vowed that those involved will face the law.
