Garissa MCA Aspirant Arrested Over Threats Against Non-Somali Residents

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested Bare Sahara Ahmed in connection with remarks captured in a viral video circulating on social media, deemed to be incisive and likely to undermine national cohesion.

The arrest follows a swift and thorough review of the video, alongside ongoing investigations to establish the full context and intent of the statements made.

The suspect is currently in lawful custody and is being processed pending arraignment in court.

“The DCI wishes to remind members of the public that freedom of expression, as enshrined in the Constitution, must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law. Utterances that may incite division, hatred, or threaten peaceful coexistence will be dealt with firmly and without exception,” DCI said.

DCI has urged members of the public to remain calm, maintain peace, and refrain from sharing inflammatory content that may escalate tensions.

Bare Sahara Ahmed Viral Video

In the video, Ahmed said the situation in Garissa is not between the police and the residents, but rather between Christians and Muslims.

He claimed that some police officers from other parts of the country are asking for transfers to Garissa only to end up killing the residents.

“We don’t want to see an officer who is not a Somali in Garissa. Let everyone stay at their home. Garissa is ours, not for Merus, Luos, and Kambas. It belongs to us. Everyone is staying at their place in Kenya,” Ahmed said.

She went ahead to argue that the laws of the Muslim religion state that a person who kills someone should be killed.

However, Ahmed said the community follows the Kenyan law, which states that people who commit murder but are not asked why, the security officers have not arrested the police officer who killed a local.

Ahmed said Garissa residents will continue demonstrating until the government intervenes and ensures justice prevails.
