Nairobi County Renames Galana Road to Honour Pheroze Nowrojee

Share

The Nairobi City County Government will officially rename Galana Road in Kilimani to Pheroze Nowrojee Road on May 4, 2026, in honour of the late senior counsel and human rights advocate Pheroze Nowrojee.

In a statement dated May 3 2026, the Nairobi County Government said the decision comes after a motion introduced in the Nairobi City County Assembly by Waithera Chege.

The motion urged the County Executive to recognise Nowrojee’s contribution to the rule of law, democracy, and human rights in Kenya.

In the motion, the County Assembly notes that devolved governments have the mandate over county roads under Article 186(1) of the Constitution and the Fourth Schedule, which includes the naming and renaming of public infrastructure.

Nowrojee’s Contributions

It further highlights Kenya’s long-standing practice of honouring individuals who have made visible contributions to society through such recognitions.

The County Assembly describes Nowrojee as a distinguished lawyer, scholar, and patriot whose work left a lasting impact on Kenya’s legal and constitutional landscape.

It shows his commitment to justice, human dignity, and the rule of law.

It further notes that he often offered legal services pro bono and remained steadfast in defending constitutional principles even during politically challenging periods.

Motion By County Assembly

The motion also referred to his recognition both locally and internationally, including being named Jurist of the Year by the Kenyan chapter of the International Commission of Jurists in 1995.

He also received awards from the International Bar Association, among others.

Additionally, the Assembly acknowledged his contributions to academia; he lectured at the University of Nairobi, the University of Dar es Salaam, and the Kenya School of Law.

He was also an author of several works, including A Vote for Kenya: The Elections and the Constitution 2013 and A Kenyan Journey 2014.

The County Assembly noted that the renaming is guided by the county’s policy on property addressing and street naming.

This outlines procedures for selecting and approving road names within Nairobi.

Media Invited

According to a statement to the media, the renaming ceremony will begin at 8:00 a.m., with participants meeting at Ankole Restaurant before proceeding to the junction of Galana and Kahyawe roads for the official unveiling of the road’s new name.

The event is expected to bring together members of the Nowrojee family, county officials, and Nairobi County Assembly representatives

Organisations, including the Law Society of Kenya and Amnesty International Kenya, will also be present.

Speakers will include members of the legal fraternity and civil society, among them Martha Karua and Professor Issa Shivji, who are scheduled to deliver reflections on Nowrojee’s life and legacy.

Unveiling New Road

The unveiling of the new road name is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., followed by media engagements.

Nairobi County Government said the initiative also reflects the ongoing collaboration between residents, businesses, and the county government in improving the Kilimani area.

This is after a recent community greening exercise along Galana Road and its surroundings.

The County Assembly also stated that renaming the road would serve as a lasting tribute to Nowrojee’s legacy and ensure that his contributions to justice, integrity, and public service continue to be recognised by future generations.
