Police in Kitui County intercepted a passenger bus along the Thika-Garissa Highway on May 3, 2026, and discovered a cache of ammunition and government-issued stores hidden in the vehicle’s luggage compartment.
According to a report by DCI, the operation was carried out by a multi-agency security team that was stationed at a roadblock in Kanyonyoo during a routine inspection.
The bus with a registration number KCW 208A, which belongs to Buscar Sacco and operates on the Lamu Nairobi route, was searched after the officers became suspicious of a parcel in the boot.
“A multi-agency security team manning a roadblock at Kanyonyoo along the Thika–Garissa Highway has intercepted a passenger bus ferrying a cache of ammunition and government stores, thwarting what could have been a serious security threat,” DCI said.
Inside a blue metallic box, they recovered 19 rounds of 7.62x51mm G3 ammunition, 116 rounds of 7.62x39mm AK-47 ammunition, two empty AK-47 magazines.
They also recovered two machetes, and assorted General Service Unit (GSU) items including ceremonial attire, combat jackets, jungle trousers, and a red beret.

Police have launched investigations into the source and intended destination of the intercepted ammunition, with the police terming the discovery a major security concern.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the box had been booked at the Mokowe booking office without sender details, which raises serious questions,” the DCI report read.
The DCI believe this recovery may point to a wider network which is involved in the illegal movement of ammunition and government stores across various counties.
“This was not an ordinary parcel. We are pursuing critical leads to identify those behind it and to dismantle any criminal network involved,” the DCI added.
The suspects who are the driver, Abdulrazak Ahmed Abadalla, and the conductor, Bernard Ochieng Odhiambo, remain in custody at Kanyonyoo Police Station as the detectives continue with interrogations and forensic analysis of the recovered items.
