Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics: Africa’s First Olympic Games Explained

Share

Senegal will make history by hosting the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar from October 31 to November 13, 2026. This will be the first Olympic event ever held in Africa.

Nearly 3,000 young athletes will compete in 153 events across different sports.

Organisers expect the Games to also welcome around 5,000 international visitors, including coaches, officials, and Olympic staff.

Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi says the event carries strong meaning for the continent.

“It’s incredibly symbolic because the continent has been producing amazing sports competitions,” Dubi said.

Travel and Connectivity Will Be Key

Organisers say transport and travel are major priorities for the success of the Games.

Dubi explained that most services will be handled locally in Dakar to support the economy. However, international travel remains a challenge.

“Travel and connectivity, when you have a global event, are always incredibly important. The logistics of it are really difficult,” he said.

He added that many participants will need to travel through multiple hubs before reaching Senegal.

“It’s not always incredibly convenient to travel from one country to the next in Africa. Sometimes you even have to go back through Europe,” Dubi said.

Officials are now considering charter flights to improve movement across African countries.

The Dakar Games are designed to highlight Africa’s young population and sporting talent.

Dubi said the event is not just for young people, but also built by them.

“If there is one legacy that this event will leave, it is the workforce and the talents that will have been revealed,” he said.

Training programmes have already started to prepare young people in Senegal and across Africa for roles in sports management, logistics, and event organisation.

A Lasting Legacy for Senegal

Organisers believe the Games will bring long-term benefits beyond sports.

Dubi said Senegal will gain strong experience in transport, security, and logistics.

“Transportation, logistics, private security, all of these will have new expertise at a level and magnitude that is probably unprecedented,” he said.

He added that this experience could help Dakar host more global events in the future.

“I would hope they will have the desire and confidence to bid for future events in Dakar,” Dubi noted.

Final Preparations Underway

With six months left, organisers say most of the planning is already in place, but the final phase is the most demanding.

Dubi compared it to preparing for guests at home at the last minute.

“We are in that six months where everything comes together, and that’s the challenge,” he said.

He added that strong government support, local companies, and a solid organising team are helping push preparations forward.
