Is Kenya Ready to Host 2027 AFCON? Hussein Mohamed Speaks

Share

Kenya has confirmed its readiness to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) assuring Parliament that key preparations remain on track despite ongoing internal governance disputes.

FKF President Hussein Mohammed told lawmakers that the country’s planning, infrastructure development, and operational frameworks are progressing in line with Confederation of African Football (CAF) requirements.

Appearing before the Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture, chaired by Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama on May 5, 2026, FKF Mohammed expressed confidence in Kenya’s preparedness to stage the continental tournament.

“I am pleased to report that Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 AFCON are in excellent shape, proceeding on schedule and fully aligned with CAF’s requirements and expectations,” he said.

He added that critical structures required for hosting the tournament have already been established.

“Kenya is ready. Our infrastructure is on track, our Local Organising Committee is operational, our Hosting Agreement is executed, and our planning is fully integrated with our co-hosts,” he said.

FKF Medical and Operational Systems Meet CAF Standards

Mohammed also assured the Committee that Kenya’s emergency and medical response systems meet CAF’s strict hosting requirements, noting that a unified framework has been developed.

“Kenya’s emergency medical services framework for AFCON 2027 meets CAF’s mandatory standards,” he said.

He further explained that the system integrates government emergency services, CAF protocols, and stadium operations into a coordinated response mechanism.

“Kenya has fully developed a CAF-certified contingency management framework for AFCON 2027, integrating government emergency services, CAF protocols, and venue operations into a single, tested response architecture,” he stated.

Governance Concerns Emerge Within FKF

Despite assurances on readiness, lawmakers raised concerns over internal disputes within the federation, questioning whether governance issues could undermine Kenya’s credibility as a host nation.

In a separate session, FKF Vice President McDonald Mariga, speaking on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC), highlighted allegations of mismanagement, lack of transparency, and questionable financial dealings.

According to the NEC report, there was alleged direct authorization of payments amounting to Ksh 42.7 million by the FKF President to an unlicensed entity.

The report also cited irregular CHAN 2024 insurance arrangements and charter flight procurement concerns.

Calls for Accountability and Joint Investigation

The NEC recommended that conflicted officials step aside to allow independent investigations into the allegations and restore institutional credibility.

“These are weighty issues. We need a serious convergence to interrogate these issues,” the Committee Chairperson noted.

The Parliamentary Committee resolved to convene a joint meeting involving both FKF leadership and NEC officials to address the disputes comprehensively.
