AFCON 2027 in Focus as CAF Boss Holds Crucial Talks With FKF

Share

CAF President Patrice Motsepe is in Kenya for the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, where he is expected to meet top football officials and address growing concerns around local football leadership and AFCON 2027 preparations.

Kenya is among the three countries set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

The tournament remains Africa’s biggest football event, and preparations are now under scrutiny due to internal disputes within Kenyan football leadership.

FKF Leadership Crisis Raises Concerns

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is currently facing a leadership standoff. Two rival factions have emerged, each claiming legitimacy, raising fears that the dispute could affect planning for the continental tournament.

One faction is led by FKF President Hussein Mohammed, while his deputy, McDonald Mariga, has also claimed leadership following a disputed National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

Mohammed has rejected his removal, calling it illegal. He insists that only the president has the authority to convene NEC meetings.

“Under Article 38 of the FKF constitution, only the president has the authority to convene an NEC meeting, rendering the ‘coup d’état’ invalid,” Mohammed has argued.

Mariga, however, maintains that he is the acting president.

Legal Intervention Adds Complexity

The dispute has now reached the courts. The Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) and the High Court have temporarily blocked the implementation of resolutions passed by Mariga’s faction, giving Mohammed a legal advantage for now.

Motsepe to Hold Key Meetings

Patrice Motsepe will hold meetings with senior officials from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to review AFCON 2027 preparations and assess readiness for the tournament.

“Kenya is amongst the three Nations that will host next year’s TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations in June–July 2027 – the biggest sporting event on African soil,” CAF stated.

“Dr Motsepe will also hold several meetings with senior officials from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda on the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2027 preparations.”
