A multi-agency security team led by the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport intercepted a consignment containing methamphetamine worth more than KSh10.5 million that was destined for the Philippines.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said officers carried out the operation on May 6 at around 11:30 a.m.

The DCI said officers intercepted the drugs during a verification exercise at the United Parcel Service-G4S facility located within the KQ shed at the airport.

Detectives said the parcel was being shipped from Nairobi to Las Piñas in the Philippines.

Drugs Labelled As Handmade Bags And Clothes

The consignment had been declared as “handmade bags and clothes,” in what DCI believes was an attempt to conceal the true contents from the authorities.

However, during a detailed physical inspection conducted in the presence of officers from the joint security team.

The detectives discovered white crystal substances hidden inside two handbags and wrapped in clear bags.

Preliminary tests, which were conducted at the scene, confirmed that the substance was methamphetamine which weighed approximately 1,320 grams.

Street Value Of The Narcotics

Authorities estimated the street value of the narcotics at KSh 10,560,000.

The consignment was immediately seized and detained as exhibit material pending further investigations.

The DCI said that they have launched efforts to trace and apprehend individuals who are linked to the attempted drug trafficking operation.

This includes those involved in packaging, transportation, and the intended export of the drugs.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains steadfast in its resolve to dismantle these networks through intelligence-driven operations and seamless multi-agency collaboration,” the DCI said in part of its statement.
